TMB Stage 5: Champex-Lac to Trient

Quick stats: 9.93 mi · +2,801 ft · route via Col de Bovine · effort: moderate

Route

We took the Col de Bovine route rather than the Fenêtre d’Arpette alternative, which was still snow-blocked in late June. Bovine trades the higher, more dramatic Fenêtre for a longer but gentler traverse through alpine pasture, with some of the best sustained views of the trip once you’re above the treeline.

Water sources

Alpage de Bovine (1,987 m) is a reliable water stop roughly at the midpoint of the day.

Where to stay

Hôtel Le Dahu, Argentière — our first of two nights there, since Stage 6 also finishes nearby.

Conditions and gear

Our lowest average heart rate of the whole trek despite solid elevation gain — a long, steady, forgiving grade rather than a sharp climb. Good stage to enjoy the scenery rather than grind.
